The ZZ-4 has a 153 tooth flexplate, my old flexplate had 168 tooth ring gear, can I reuse my old starter, or do I need to buy a different starter? All the performance catalogs don't list a difference between the starters and say for 153 and 168 tooth. The ZZ-4 has holes for both straight across and offset starters, my old starter has offset holes. I am about tapped out with everything I've had to buy in the last few weeks for the engine install and really don't want to have to spend $200+ for a new mini-starter. If I can't use my old starter does anyone know what year model starters will fit the ZZ-4?
I am not sure on this but I bought the base model crate engine last year and the salesman told me to order my parts for an 85 chevy truck.I dont know why but he was right (Starter included).
1- Change the flex plate to a 168 tooth, cost aproximatley $75.00
2 - Buy a new nose piece for your old starter that has the two bolt holes in line, not staggered. Go to your GM dealer for this part, they should have it. I don't know how much it would cost.
In line holes = 153 teeth flex plate.
Staggered holes = 168 teeth flex plate.
I went for the 168 tooth flex plate so I could use my old starter.
I found by doing a search on the Salle Chevrolet message board, that the 88-90 Corvette starter has straight across bolt pattern and is available from GM P/N 10455702 (or a parts store.) Other compatible starters are P/N10465143 and P/N12361146.
