Ls1 swap, deciding donor car 04gto or 98 camaro
Hwy you guys, new here and I was just wondering what donor car would be better for an ls1 swap into my 79 vette? There's two cars available, a Gto with about 50,000 miles(was crashed front end) or a clean 98 camaro(millage unknown but I think it's at a high number). Wondering which is the best canidate to swap out. Appreciate all responses.

How much are these doaner cars? Have you checked the price of an ls crate engine? If they are about the same price you can get a brand new ls with a warrenty.
When I replaced my engine years ago only a couple of people had done the ls swap. I thought about doing one and had a doaner car all lined up but didn't do it because at the time it was a huge undertaking getting the wiring harness and computer to work. I went with a ZZ4 instead. Today's ls crate packages are practically plug and play.

I would use the later engine. You will need that Camaro pan tho - thats the one for your your swap. It will also be drive by wire - no throttle cable. Very doable. I used an 04 drive by wire engine. Get EVERYTHING from the donor car. And read this site til your eyes bleed. It's all there. http://www.lt1swap.com

GTO LS is far better than a 98 motor.....I would only use 2002 or later LS motor.....the early LS heads have many unique parts like perimeter valve cover bolts....later motors have LS6 type venting on lower crankcase bulkheads....far better choice for performance use.

I agree with the above. Go for the GTO and get everything you can that is bolted to the engine. I put an 02 Camaro SS motor in mine that had 20k miles.
