Default Cam ?

Hi new to the forum. Looking for a good performance cam for my motor. Have a 73 4 speed 350. Currently has bpe 2.02 heads performer intake 1.6 roller rockers and hei and Holley 650. Wouldn't mind changing to a better intake manifold as well has 3" cowl on stock hood if anyone knows the best package that would fit. Thanks

If you new to engine building I would go to Edelbrock and by one of there POWER PACKAGES, Its one of the best performance kits you can buy.

Ooops.......I read it twice to be sure too

Anyhoo........buy a Dart Dual Plane Air Gap style intake and try a 12-211-2......this is the old 270H Magnum.....yes it is an old grind but it will break in nice and sound killer. If you had more gear I would jump to a 280H.
There are more modern grinds available....the 274XE Comp is a nice grind but can be tricky to break in and does not sound as good......they will make about the same power with the newer grind being better down low.

:agree:^ ^^
My sons and I build a lot of high performance engines ... I am currently running a 650hp 427 gen1 SBC in my C3 1979

But if you do not have the skills, or $$$$ to do it right.. Go with the Edelbrock heads cam and intake package. it is a very good package for the novice. We did a full Edelbrock package on one of our C4's, Although we did increases the compression with smaller chamber and thinner gaskets, we only got to 10.25:1
This combination, netted 397hp at the rear wheels, through an automatic. and slightly more torque.. so, yes, a good combination for sure.

Hi,

The Air-Gap is a good manifold!! Is this the stock motor (other than changes you've made)? L48 or L82? L48 cam was .450 lift and L82 was .480 if I remember correctly. 1.6 rockers are making a it pretty healthy lift already. Even a new design cam with the same specs as the L82 would be a noticeable improvement. But, I wouldn't do much more than that with the 9.0 comp ratio.

Truthfully, the best kick in the pants change would be a gear change! If just a weekend 'fun' car, 3.70 would be an awesome gear!

Good luck.

Would need to know the flow numbers but BPE is known to do some nice work so I am sure they flow some air. Mild hyd roller your 400/400 all day with 350 CID.

It's an L82 I did put thinner head gasket on when putting the heads on and has headers and full exhaust

Just re-read your original post and see you have a Performer' manifold. The Air-Gap is a Performer with an 'air-gap'. Supposed to make intake charge a little cooler. So, going to that would be a SMALL benefit.
Gear change would be the next big step. Tuning (jet changes, timing curve changes) to make the most of what you have now also needed.

Good luck.

If you have an L82 you already have a pretty good cam. Good enough, at least, that its probably not worth spending the money on a cam change unless you are prepared to move up to a roller cam. That L82 cam is a GM#3896962 and has about 222 deg of duration at .050" and about .450 lift IIRC. Back in the day I we used to install this as a performance cam. Its a great street grind. Certainly you can do a little better with a newer cam grind, but I doubt it would be worth the time and money.

the air gap has better runners than std performer

If its a stock stroke you may not notice it til upper midrange/upstairs though; if thats all you got run it can still run very well.

The Magnum 270H cam was the first cam I put in my 355ci L48. It is still a great cam and sounds great, bit of a lumpy idle
