I helped a friend put an SST conversion kit in last year, great conversion and the 5 speed is great. The kit has all the needed parts, no cutting the drive shaft.

I agree the 4 speed is not so good the 5 or 6 speed is fantastic.

I converted my 71 from a 4 speed to a 5 speed with the Tremic kit by Silver Sport and was very pleased.

As the owner of an 80 with the original 4 speed, the rear is a 3.07, not 3.08. If it was an automatic and I was switching out the tranny, I would go with an overdrive auto or a 5 speed.
The 5 speed would also allow me to switch out the 3.07 rear gears. Putting a 4 speed in place of the automatic will basically limit you to the existing rear.
Regarding a replacement shifter of better quality? If anyone knows of a direct, bolt in replacement, I would love to know about it. The factory shifter bolts to the crossmember. Even with a new shifter put in by the owner before me, this is not an example of "excellent" GM quality, to say the least.

I have used Hurst Competition Plus shifters a number of times over the years and find them to be excellent quality and a vast improvement over the factory shifter. They bolt directly to the trans and that in itself is a big improvement.

Hurst shifters have been a favorite replacement unit in my Mustang's, a Nova and Camaro's. They don't make one for the 80 vette. There have been past posts describing how forum members have modified earlier model units to fit the 80 with cutting and welding to the crossmember. As I asked, if anyone knows of a direct fit replacement for the 80, I and probably some others would like to know.
