Hi 70,
Welcome!
The firewall insulation was originally glued to the cowl directly below the opening for the windshield.
It was typically installed in a very hap-hazard way. You'll have to hold it up in place to determine what is the left and right sides.
What year car are you working on?
Regards,
Alan
Here's an example of some of the original.
I believe what Dr.R sells is a replacement for items number 1 and 6.
I can't visualize the fit up, the GM diagrams doesn't look like the 2 pieces I have, it's for a 69 and the pieces were missing when I inherited the car!
Hi 70,
Perhaps you can post a photo of the pieces you have and someone can point out what's the top and the left/right.
These pieces were very roughly die cut originally, and pushed into place with just a little glue to secure them.
Regards,
Alan

Mr. Alan, i played around with the sound deadener yesterday and i think i may have it resolved, thanks, the picture/diagram you sent me very helpful. one more thing, i also bought the three piece firewall insulation mat (item#2) from the Doc, and i temperarily installed it with bolts through the firewall to see the fit up. it seems to fit good, with the exception of the passenger side opening where the heater core is mounted, the floor board opening is larger than the mat, my AMS book (1969) shows cutting that area away, is that what i need to do in order to get it to fit properly, thanks Stick
Hi 70,
Yes, the AIM indicates some of the blanket should be cut away under certain situations.
Does your car have a/c?
The mat is cut for that option since the opening in the firewall for an a/c car is larger than the one in a non a/c car.
Regards,
Alan

yes, my car is an original AC car and i've got it rebuilt already and will be putting it back on the car. should i install the mat first, then put the sound deadener on or does a portion of the deadener go behind the mat, thanks so much for your help, my first restoration and i'm learning as i go.
Hi 70,
I would install the mat first and then the sound deadener!
FIRST restoration… GOOD FOR YOU!
Nothing like restoring an old Corvette to humble an individual!!!
Would be interesting to see some photos of what you're working on?!
Regards,
Alan
