I have an issue with the Muncie in my '72 LT1. It shift great when car is moving but from a stop it is difficult to shift into first and/or second gear. Could this be a clutch adjustment problem (e.g., too much or little free play)?

I would appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks,

put it up on a lift and check and see if the shift arm is loose ... sounds like its binding or bent or out of adjustment
.. if it shifts ok in the rest of the gears i dont its the clutch ,, just my view

Yes it could be the clutch, once your moving the synchros will help you get it in gear if the rpms match. If you dont think your matching the rpms the put that at the bottom of the list and check the linkage . Has this been a gradual problem, always there, or suddenly today theres a problem. Put it in first with the engine off, then start it and slowly ley out the clutch, where does it start to slow the engine down, 1" from the floor, 3" from the floor, 5" from the floor?
Number 1; unless you have already changed it, make sure you have a good quality GL4 oil in your trans. Using the correct oil does make a big difference.

Need more info - has any work been recently done to the trans clutch shifter? Are you indicating it is a shifter issue (they have to be perfectly adjusted) or a clutch issue or an internal transmission issue? Did this come on slowly or all of a sudden?

The transmission was just rebuilt and clutch was replaced. I used a quality GL4 gear lube in the transmission. The issue is definitely shifting from a dead stop with engine idling. Once moving the transmission shifts perfectly. I'm assuming that I don't have sufficient "free play" in the linkage so will try to adjust the clutch linkage. I'm assuming the less free play in the adjustment results in more free play when the clutch is fully depressed. Right now there is minimal "free play" when the clutch is fully depressed then engaged (less than 1").
How does it downshift from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st.....? I have the same issues that also includes downshifting....I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see if you resolve your issues.
Incomplete clutch disengagement will be most obvious putting in gear (typically 1st and reverse) from a stop. Check to make sure the clutch pedal and Z bar linkage are adjusted correctly.
