Default 1981 with De Witts/Elec fans

Anyone on here do the radiator/fan combo on an 81? Where did you mount the fan controller? I am using a Painless PWM unit, and it needs to stay cool and dry.
I am leaning toward on top of the A/C evap housing.
I would like to see any pictures of this install.

I put mine on the inner fender. Stays dry, no problems in years.

Haven't installed mine yet but I'm following the thread. I don't see anyplace to mount my controller. Thought about under the car on rear of left front fender skirt.

They built it for use under hood, which means it does not have to stay completely dry, or particularly cool for that matter either. You just can't expect cool and dry the hood. So, you just can't put it where it'll see a lot of water or close to high heat engine components. Any location that at least somewhat shelters it from getting badly blasted by water and isn't close to the exhaust manifolds should be fine.

higher and more forward on the inner fenders would work. Where you're thinking should be fine too.

The C6 Corvettes have the PWM module on the bottom corner of the fan shroud. But that spot could be a little too wet for the Painless controller.

looks roughly the same size as the old transistor ignition modules. why not out the front where they went ? be a lot cooler for it.

I'll look Weds., but remember, 81 has all that cold air induction stuff. The space is a premium.
The painless unit is rated like 265*. It has a chip inside, and it records ambient temp. Excede 265*, and the warranty is null and void. At least they warn you about it.

I have the Painless unit as well in my 1980 with DeWitts radiator. It mounted perfectly on the passenger side fender next to the filler neck. little heat and protected from water. I'll see if i can snap a pic tomorrow.

Thank you. That sounds ideal.
Any issues? Did you tie in the speed control?

Hey Jeff, how you doin' man?? as to your question there, I mounted my fan controller on top of the fan shroud, it's identical to the high speed HVAC blower control relay so good for 30 amps or so, the Dual Spals only draw like 25 I understand, not that I have measured mine....
I ran a wire with a 30 amp blade fuse, up and over top from the alt out stud, directly to the control relay, and the FI computer controls both fans at once, I suppose I could get more fancy but it works well in FLORIDA so leave well enough alone, after some 22 years......

here are the pics of where i mounted mine. I did not hook up the speed controller since i have no electronics to connect it to. I removed the cigarette lighter and mounted the manual override switch there which is very handy.

Thank you for the pics. Definitely a good option.

I have to ask. The lower picture radiator hose. Is that what I think it is?

LOL, yes it is. It's a clear tube with heat shrink clamps. I thought it was cheesy at first but quickly learned how helpful it was in determining water flow when trying to get my controller dialed in. Between that and a infra red temp gun i have my controller dialed in just where it likes to be.

also, pay attention to where you mount your controller so you can get to the adjustment pots. They use a tiny phillips screwdriver tip and from what i read very delicate.

I finally have the time for this project.
I am installing the Stewart pump and the De Witts radiator tomorrow.
I WAS going to install the temp sensor where the old thermoswitch for the aux fan is in the head, but its buried in dip sticks and heat shields and clutter. I would have to drop the starter, heat shield, dip stick, and pull the plugs to just get a wrench on it, vs. the drivers side where its easy, but has the gauge sensor already there. The ECM sensor is on the intake, so that place is taken.
I am going to use the top port of the water pump instead.
Anyone see an issue with this?
(Delphi sensor for the painless PWM controller).
