Default Starter wiring fuseable links

So my recently purchased 77 has some hack job wiring... Really bad stuff... I've been tearing it out and fixing everything, but i hit a stopping point with my starter wiring. This is what is currently on the car

Yep... They hacked it off... I know the black wire goes to the bellhousing bolt by the starter.

Been researching and came across a post by mds3013 showing this pic(hope he doesn't mind me borrowing it...)

Mine is missing the fuseable links at the end of the double red wire setup. I was curious what I should do about this? The cut off wiring I do have is 12ga, should I just step down to 14ga at this spot?

Hi mrt,
Typically the proper protection for a wire is achieved by using fusible link that is 4 wire gauges smaller than the wire being protected.
Thus 12 gauge wire would be protected by a 16 gauge fusible link.
Regards,
Alan

I also have a 77 and my starter wires are screwed up ,I'm going to order a new one ,starter extension wire harness mine has air so the # is VSM7778AC it's not cheap at 80.00. They do make it for non AC cars also ,there should be two plugs near the top of you're firewall that it plugs into.

Fusible links are designed to "fry" when a dead short occurs. So, the insulation and terminal ends on fusible links MUST be non-flammable.

You can't use regular wire for making a fusible link. Well, you could...but if it blew, you would end up with
