I have a 79 L48 w/ a/c, pwr steering. Not sure why I am having this issue just pop up. The misalignment is causing the alternator belt to fray and is close to tearing thru.
I have read all the threads concerning this issue and have studied the Assembly Manual. The manual shows NO spacers or slims needed for alignment. The alternator appears to be closet to the firewall by about the width of the alternator pulley or width of the belt.
Do I need to use spacers ,shim to move alternatoe closer to the front of car. If so, where do I put them.
I have pictures but they don't show the misalignment very well.
Could I possibly have an incorrect alternator??
Hi mr,
Have you checked your AIM for the proper upper bracket mounting? Is it in the proper position at the water pump bolt?
Is the upper alternator bracket on the correct side of the threaded boss on the alternator case?
In early years the bracket is to the rear of the boss, (bolt threaded from the rear), while later it's forward of the the boss, (bolt threaded from the front).
Regards,
Alan
Hi mr,
Yes.
That's one place I'd check.
I'm not familiar with later engines so really can't help identify just how the bracket should be mounted….washers, spacers, etc.
The AIM for your car would be a good source for the configuration.
Sorry!
Regards,
Alan
lay a yard stick across the face of the pulley, use this as a guide to determine,
if yours is parallel and in the same plane/distance with mating pulley.
Thanks guys. I used the yard stick method and ended up putting a 1/8" shim between the block and the brace. Seems to be really close.
The belt is frayed in spots. I hope it don't break. Don't want to put a new one on. You have to remove the other two to replace the alt. belt, right???
