Default 383 stroker engine build questions

A local engine builder is building a 383 stroker for my 1980 so I have a few questions:

For AFR 195 heads, if I intend to use Doug's headers, do I order heads with straight or angled plugs ?

For Performer Air-gap intake with Holley 750 double-pumper, if I use 2.5 or 3.0 inch drop base air cleaner, will this for sure clear stock hood ?

thanks in advance,
Richard

Richard, i cannot answer directly, but hopefully will help. On my stock motor with headers and side pipes, i had to use a special socket to remove the plugs. When i pulled the motor and replaced it with my current 383 which had the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads with angle plugs it made plug replacement a lot easier. Not sure how the different headers will affect this though.

I'm curious on what responses you get on the intake since i'm using a Weiand Street warrior dual plane intake, holley 750 and a 14" air filter with 2" drop base. I'm interested in a different intake but the low profile hood of the 1980 may limit options.

i have angle plug afr's with dougs headers, fit just fine.

im using a victor jr intake with a 2.5'' drop base and it clears the 75 hood i have on my car, im pretty sure that sits higher than a performer air gap

I have the AFR straight plug heads on my 355 (same as 383 block) with 1 3/4 inch headers and have no issues with the spark plugs....

Default AFR 195's

I am running the straight plug version 195's with Hooker Super Comps 1 3/4" primaries. I have no issues with plug accessibility. Can't help you with the hood clearance. I am running a Dart Kool Kan with a 1" HVH super sucker spacer and Mighty Demon 750 carb. Covered with a L88 hood plenty of clearance.

Because for the life of the motor you can't use quality lightweight vibration type dampers, light weight flywheels or SFI flexplates

WOW....Those are impressive numbers. Congrats

I'm going to build a 383 for my 81 and I'm shopping for "recipes"

I'm thinking about a set of ARF heads and just need to figure our pistons and CR ratio. I have a late 90s 4 bolt roller block.

Are those the true cam specs or are they adjusted for the 1.6 rockers? Any on details on the build would be interesting to see.

Nice work

We supplied the customer a BYO kit and he and a friend put it together. The cam numbers reflect the 1.6 ratio.

ON the intake/hood clearance question:

I have a 79 with modified with an '80 front clip and hood. I have at different times run the Edelbrock 7104 RPM Performer and 7501 Air gap RPM intake, all with a 2 1/2 inch drop base cleaner and a Holley DP.

Now I have a small block stroker, AFR heads with the 7501 air gap, a Quickfuel 850. I have adequate clearance for a 3 inch filter.
