In my experience, you need to bend or "bow" the dash slightly to make it a little shorter and so get one end past the pillar. Obviously need to be careful to avoid cracking the dash. Heating it with a hair dryer first helps.

Hair Dryer may not be enough. Suggest leaving it out in the sun and let it get really hot. It will crack vey easily!
