The plastic rivets that hold the metal clip that holds the horn button have deteriorated / been busted such that the horn button no longer can be held in place. Can that part be repaired or do I just break down and buy the ~40$ kit that contains that part and all of the others including the screws? I do not see just that part (the two pieces of metal held together with plastic rivets) for sale by itself anywhere.
Either buy the rivets or screws but avoid a complete contact assembly. The last time I bought a contact assembly from another parts vendor it was a cheap Chinese copy that didn't fit right and continually blew the horn when all of the surrounding parts were re-installed.
Go to Lowe's and get (3) 10 X 24 X 1/2" nylon screws washers and nuts.
If your Lowe's doesn't carry them... don't bother going to Home Depot. They don't carry Nylon screws/washers anymore per the guy on the floor I talked to. I just spent hours a few weeks ago chasing down Nylon screws/washers/nuts for a different fix on my 78 (heat-a/c vacuum switch fix), visiting store upon store. Finally had success at Ace Hardware.
Ok, I finally got the nylon nuts and bolts and did the repair. The horn does not work ( could be a fuse or some issue, not necessarily related to this) but I notice that the horn does not seem to be able to move like the one on my '69 does. I am pretty sure I put it back together the way it was before, but with the nylon bolts. I did not trim the excess, so there is about 1/8" sticking out of the nut pointing towards the driver. Also I put thin washers between the two parts in addition to the existing insulator, I saw that was recommended since the original part can thin out over time. Any ideas on what I may have screwed up?
