There are no pins in the hinges. I marked the position of the hood in relation to the hinges with tape and then had two friends (one in each side) hold it while I removed the bolts. It's pretty light so it isn't difficult.
You for sure want to mark your hinge locations with either tape or a sharp pencil that shows where to put them back. Then when reinstalling I loosely tighten the bolts and close the hood to align the pegs in the holes and gaps side to side. Slowly raise the hood and tighten the hinge bolts. I'm sure there may be better techniques.
Easy as pie....take enough bath/hand towels layered over/folded up along the hood edge/fenders gap, snug as possible....take other larger towels/sheets/etc old blankets, and wad them up under the hood leading edge, pack nice and snug.....take a stick of wood about 3/4 inch diameter/square......and hold hood open with it, you can lower the hood latch a bit, and pull the two bolts from it to the hood....lay the latch down inside the engine bay....loosen one hinge bolt and remove the other on one side, same thing on the other, pull the loose bolt and allow hood to gently rest on towels....same on other side...IF you prop it up well with the stick, it should not disturb enough to fall out, just use some common sense in stick placement.....you can then remove stick and lower hood carefully by hand....and if you tall/strong enough, set hood in a nice safe place.....takes me maybe 20 minits total, as I have had this '72 for about 22 years.....
I used a adjustable paint pole to prop open the hood while removing the support bolts. Here I am giving suggestions and I cant keep a torque converter seated while installing and engine..... lol!!
Yep, one person each side, one hand under the front to support it while the other hand removes the bolts. Then walk it over the car and out of the way - in many cases I just put some old blankets on the roof and place the bonnet (hood) on top of the car.
They say there is no such thing as a dumb question. Here's my try.
How does one remove the hood? I don't see how you can remove the bolts on the hood without it falling into the front end.
Are there pins in the hinge?
I quess you could insert headless bolts in place of each removed bolt.
Is this the correct method??
Thanks,
Len
Use lots of tape and padding so you do not scratch anything. I removed the hood by myself using a rope to support it while loosening the hinge bolts. I does go easier if you have one or two helpers.
Not that this matters...because I am sure all of you know your own cars.
BUT..when I have to remove a hood I am REALLY careful on and where I apply tape....and this is simply because...most of the Corvettes I work on have been painted on...and most shops that paint these cars do not prep it correctly.....so when you apply tape on the edges of your hood and other areas...DO NOT be surprised that WHEN you go and try to remove the tape....regardless on how light the stickiness of the tape is...you can pull and lift off paint due the edges of the hood are often times overlooked when it is being prepped....and thus...the paint does not truly adhere..and actually begin to want to flake off all on its own.
