Default Fuel system upgrade

As some of you may have seen in my Cylinder head thread, I've pulled my engine and am having it freshened up. I'm also going to most likely have some head work done. After all that I'm also finally upgrading the carb from my Eddy Thunder Series 650 to a Holley Ultra Double pumper 750.

What I'm wondering is will my stock fuel system, which I've continued to use since I first built the motor 7yrs ago, continue to cut it? Or, do I need to beef up the fuel system?

I'm currently running a completely stock fuel setup... stock tank and pickup, stock hard lines, mechanical pump with a return, and a single feed to the Edelbrock 650.

I see my option as either being:
  1. Continue to use the stock system
  2. Get an upgraded mechanical pump (there don't seem to be any with a return port, so I'd also have to do a bypass regulator to retain the return line correct?)
  3. Upgrade to an electric pump, obviously the most involved.

I'd like to get away without whatever I can. I've read the mechanical pump is good up to about 450hp? I'm currently at about 430hp at the crank and looking at being somewhere between 450 and 500 when the motor is done.

What do you guys think?

I doubt you'll need more unless your hitting the 1/4 mile. Lars would know.

The stock pump should be sufficient. If you are concerned about the stock pump putting out enough fuel then put a high volume Holley or Edelbrock mechanical pump on. Definitely enough.

I would not put in an electric pump as long as you have a fuel pump boss on the block. My new block didn't have the boss. I was forced to put in an electric pump. Lots of time.

I agree. I thought I had a fuel starvation problem when I started doing some dyno runs awhile back and added a 130 gph electric pump. The installation is a little involved, since I also needed a pressure regulator. However- since I used a pump that had way more flow and pressure (14 psi) than I needed with my moderately modded 454, I now am having to deal with excess pressure that my regulator does not handle and overwhelms the needle and seat on my 750 cfm QFT double pumper carb with 9 psi. I am waiting for a less aggressive electric pump (7psi) to arrive so I can change it and be able to correct the torrent of gas that gets past the fuel bowls.

I'm using a Carter M4552 40 gph pump.

No issues feeding the 496 under the hood.
