700r4 shifts too early
I have a 79 with a BTO 700r4. It's been in the car for about 15 years. It's served me faithfully all this time. A couple months ago, I was working on the carburetor and neglected to reinstall the TV cable on the carb. My bad.
As soon as I figured it out (less than a 3 miles of driving), I reconnected it. Now it acts like the TV cable isn't there. The Throttle position doesn't matter, I'm in 4th gear by 25mph. Under heavy Throttle it slips in every gear and won't downshift. I can manually shift it and it works fine with no slip.
I've looked through the forums and the Internet and cannot find anything to help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know that will fry them. However, I can't be specific.

3 miles is enough to smoke the soft parts ( Clutches/Band) BECAUSE you drove it with little or no oil pressure.

I have heard about those throttle valves getting stuck in the relaxed position, pull the cable out far as you can and let it snap back a few times, see if that helps...you maybe have to drop the pan and get into that section of the valve body...AS I RECALL, you don't have to drop the brain to get into that section, maybe need to do some research on that though....

I did the same thing with a used 700R, re-attached TV cable, then drove it for years afterward. Check and clean the valve body if neccesary. Look in the pan for debris, the smell/color of the fluid, re-fill with fresh fluid, then panic.

I would look at trying what Mr Vette and SH60 suggested. You weren't driving with zero pressure on the clutches or it wouldn't have moved, minimum pressure sure, 75 to 90 psi. Trans-go kit for the 2004r has a spacer inside the tv spring so it cant stick in minimum pressure as long as the cable moves the valve. It's a good sign that it manual shifts and pulls good.

With the TV cable disconnected, the engagement of the TV cable at the transmission may have been lost. With the TV cable removed from the carb linkage, you should be able to pull on the cable and feel spring tension trying to pull it back. If you can't feel that, the cable is no longer attached to the transmission. Connecting it back up is a simple process, but you have to get under the car.

Thanks for all your help. I've been wrapped up with holiday festivities so next weekend I'm pulling the pan. We'll see what happens. I'll keep you posted.
