Is the 1972 Corvette A/C compressor equipped with the "Super Heat Switch" on the back plate?? The 72 that I bought, came with the A/C mostly disconnected and the compressor that was given with the car has the switch, but I can't find a wire to go to it. There are so many wires either melted or cut on this car that I don't know if it was there and cut off or the wire just never existed. I need to either replace or repair the compressor and don't want to spend time & money on the wrong one (no stores in my area have one to compare to and they want me to pay in advance to order one, any help??
Hi LagunaBlue,
My 72 compressor has the superheat switch and I'm very sure it is original. The 72 also has a thermal limiting fuse (3 wires) that works with the superheat switch on the compressor.
Regards,
Bob

Bob, can you take a picture of two of the compressor and it's mounting for me? I'll give you my email address to send them to if you like, but I'd like to see how the brackets are set up and the positioning of the switch.

I'll be glad to. I am running without the wire that connects the compressor to the fuse because it was lost some where along the way. It is a black wire with a special end to attach to a pin on the back of the compressor.
Jurassic Classic has the wiring harness on eBay for $24.99. The eBay number is 272634917520. I would recommend you buy this... it makes everything look and work correctly. Send me your email and I'll send pictures tonight. My email is bob007@homesc.com.

I haven't seen the clutch cut out switch on a 72 vette.
Many re builders mix & match parts and go as far as machining the hole for the switch.
Look at the date code under your inlet manifold and it will tell you what year the compressor is. The date code may be between the inlet and outlet or under the outlet. The first will be a letter such as B which = Feb, C = March, and so on. The second will be a number witch will tell you the day of the Month. The 3rd will be the year 2 =1972.
For example:
D 12 3 would be April 12, 1973.
Also check the pulley size, it should be just under 5 3/4'' OD.

As I have stated above, the compressor I was given with the car may not be the original, and there is no tag on it in either case which is why I'm trying to find out if it is the right style. I am hoping to find a car that has not been touched so we can clarify which compressor should be on there. I know that the "rebuilders" and other suppliers, will not care what you have and will give you what they can get ahold of. That being the case, unless the car is untouched, the tag info may not be accurate. Also, from when I worked at Chevrolet dealers back in the 60's and later, it was quite common for the parts departments to actually give out the wrong parts on warranty claims, so it could be possible to have what may be an "untouched" car with a non original part as well.

WAS not Referring to tag info!! The Raised date code on the back will tell you what you have.
Any one will work on your car so get the CHEAPEST one you can find to do the job, Just buy the belt that fits.
