Default Build Sheet Tank Sticker help

I have a 1968 C3 that seems to have been through 3 owners over its life and appears to be in fairly original unmolested condition. I believe that the gas tank has never been lowered or removed and I hope to find the Tank sticker sitting on top or a shred of it at least. I did try and look through the topside fill hole but could see nothing. My next quest is to go from the underside. My questions is - What is the best way to lower the gas tank to check for the build sheet and do I need any tools beyond a ratchet set? Any suggestions are welcome.

did you remove the rubber boot from the neck and then try looking for it.
To drop the tank you probably have to get your exhaust system out of the way.
Then remove the spare tire carrier assembly.
Drain/syphon the tank
Disconnect the fuel lines on the passenger side, there maybe two if you have a return line.
Loosen the tank straps attached to the rear cross member.
Remove the 4 bolts holding the front tank cross member.
You may want to remove the tank neck but you will need a new gasket if you do that.
You may want to remove the sender to prevent damage.
Pull down on the front edge of the tank.

I did remove the rubber gasket from the neck and used a flashlight and was not able to see anything. Your description of what is involved is to much for me to deal with. I was hoping the process was a bit easier and less invasive. Thanks

There may no longer be anything there. The stickers were never meant to be permanent. Nothing for my 68, either, if that's a comfort.

Hi B59,
The tank sheet MAY have been too far from the gas fill hole in the rear deck to see.
The instructions to remove the tank are right on.
If you find you have one I can't express strongly enough that you must be gentle with it. It can be very fragile and dirty by now.
Good Luck if you decide to lower the tank some day.
Regards,
Alan

Here's an example of location….
This has it pretty close to the neck… but if it's on the other side of the neck it can be further away and difficult to…. especially if it's very dusty on top of the tank.

Once you remove the rubber gasket, you can rent one of those plumbing inspection cameras for about 20 bucks from any tool rental place. Amazing what you can see.
Even sticking your phone in with the camera flash on produces some OK pictures.
Way easier than removing the tank if you are just investigating initially.

another place to look for a build sheet is above the radio and console area. some of us have found duplicate stickers folded there. both my 71 and 72 had them tucked in above the radio. good luck

I was able to just sneak my hand up around the LH side of the tank from underneath and get mine. It was mostly disbonded from the tank already. I lost just a small corner of it. You can get a cheap borescope on Amazon that plugs into a laptop if you want to get a glimpse of it that way. Was about $20.

And I've had my tank in and out a couple of times now, it's not as bad as it sounds. Second time took about an hour and a half.

Hi B59,
For some reason I can't open your attachment.

"If it is the build sheet is worth trying to get it or is it to far gone?"

The information on the build sheet is of most interest on a car that's been 'molested' and it's no longer clear what it's original options were.

It's also interesting for things like… what style tires were on the car, what radio was selected as an option, and did the car originally have trim rings /caps or full hub caps.

On convertibles the sheet indicates the color of the soft top and if it originally had a hard top.
Don't try to pull the sheet out. If you want it lower the tank.
Regards,
Alan

I'ts difficult to tell what the pictures show, but anything that is on top of the tank is most likely the tank sticker and it would be wise to drop the tank to see what you have. If you have searched here, you would have seen others retrieve enough to document their cars. Like revitup said; it's not so bad a job.
