I just bought a 1977 Corvette (my second) and the PO installed a "performance" exhaust system on it. I am trying to restore it to original, and cannot find the original exhaust anywhere. What the parts places are calling oem is not oem. My first 1977 Corvette, back in 1990, had round mufflers. I ordered what was supposed to be new oem mufflers from Ecklers for that one, and what they sent me looked like something that belonged on a VW Bug. MUCH smaller and shaped differently from the originals. I wound up sending the new ones back, and sandblasting and aluminum powdercoating my originals. Is there some reason why you can't buy stock reproduction mufflers for a mid '70s Corvette? I want the original look, and I want my car quiet. This is not a hot rod. I'm trying to get as close to original as possible.
Do you still have the original Y-pipe on it? If so, try to save it. The replacement Y-pipe I obtained was off just a little but it made it a little difficult to position the "round" mufflers with adequate clearance between the fender lip and the spare tire carrier.
For a truly original look, spray the bottom half of the mufflers with some flat black BBQ paint.
Thanks for the source. Yes it still has the original Y pipe. I actually want the mufflers all aluminum color, that's part of why I want the original round ones. So you can see them under the bumper cover. I am also replacing the tire carrier, and will probably leave it unpainted grey so it can also be seen from the back. This may seem a little weird, but that's the look I like.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought you were looking for an original look. The bottom of the mufflers were painted black from the factory.
I am sort of wanting the original look. On my last '77, the paint had burned off the mufflers. After trying unsuccessfully to get new oem replacements, I removed the original mufflers, had them sandblasted, and painted them with high temp aluminum paint. I really liked the look, as it made the mufflers show up. The spare tire tub was cracked, so I got a new one. It came in kind of a spotted light gray fiberglass. I cleaned and painted the metal frame black, and left the fiberglass carrier as it was, unpainted. I wanted contrast between the frame and the tub. This time I may paint the tub silver, to match the muffler. I want those parts to show up from behind the car.
