First I want to thank everyone who has helped me so far. I'm new to the forum and got involved with a 69 convertible and so far I've been getting some great help here.
Now on to my situation. I'm planning on removing the body on my convertible and am in the process of removing things and discovering all thats been screwed around with all these years. The car has had some extensive fiberglass work done to it at one time. It's held up great and looks very good on both outside and in. It has wheel flares, front nose glassed with what looks like a 75 hood and aftermarket fenders? But my problem right now is the back valiance cover by the exhaust that is supposed to bolt on and off has been glassed in to make a one piece rear end. From the inside I can see the two exhaust loops that are glassed over on the outside. So if I try to lift the body the rear frame will hit the lower body.
My question for anyone who has taken off the body is I have room to lift the body about 18' or so to the rear frame rail. When I get there can I roll the frame forward enough (maybe 12-18") to continue the lift to get rear body clear of the frame? I'm planning on lifting the body with a two post lift so jacking one end higher wont really work. Thoughts?
Thanks Alan. I figured with the radiator, fan and accessories pulled out that once off the frame the chassis should be able to roll forward enough to give me the clearance. Next is to see how they built up the front end and if its stiff got some 69 pieces of the front clip in there!
Hi Pm,
I deleted my post before you replied because I don't have first hand experience with a 68-72 with the exhaust panel bonded in place. I think it will clear when you roll the chassis forward 12"-18".
So…. caution.
Regards,
Alan
Greetings. Could you start on all four tires and after lifting body slightly pull front tires and lower onto roller dollies? Since the 2 post won't let you tilt the body maybe lowering front chassis will allow you enough separation to roll forward. Just like Alan, I don't have first hand experience. Take it slow and be cautious.
Best Regards
it will be able to come off . we had the fuel tank already out the way on a 72 and yes take it slowly . we also had the body suspended from an engine crane with the 4 (shortened) straps so it went up at a slightly forward angle . however we put the same body back on with a 2 poster hoist so the owner put a large trolley jack under the diff to raise the frame and still be able to roll the chassis forward and backward to ease it back on. It took about twenty minutes to get it off but we took about 2 hours to SLOWLY lower them together ,but mostly that time was due to his new 20k paint job and the ever present terror of a scratch
