Carter was very inconsistent in their carb numbering. I've see Cart-built Q-Jets with 4 different numbering systems:
Some Carter Q-Jets had the full Rochester carb number as is shown in the other posts above.
Some Carter Q-Jets deleted the "70" or "170" prefix (which is the Rochester designator) and used the rest of the Rochester number. For example, if the Rochester number was 7045222, the Carter number would be 45222.
Most Carter carbs used a Carter style number, which is 4 numbers followed by a letter. An example would be 4849S. There is no known cross reference from the Carter number to the Rochester number.
Finally, many Carter carbs had no number at all. I have several of them in my parts collection. If the carb is all original and has not been tampered with, you can visually identify it by year, and then you can narrow down the application by checking the jet/rod combination against specs for the various carbs that year.
