A friend came by EARLY this morning and picked up some parts I had gotten for him. WE ended out in the garage and talked some about my project, and we got around to the rear end, which I have out as I am building from the ground up. He asked what gear ratio it was, and I told him my Dad had bought it as a 3:08, and that I had checked the casting numbers which indicated it was a 3:08 bb rear end. It has the caps on the drive axles which support this. He then asked if I had ever checked it doing a tire/driveshaft test. I said no, and I got some soapstone to mark it so we could. We marked one bolt of the passenger half shaft cap (tire side) and the pinion (driveshaft). It took four full turns plus of the pinion (less than four and a quarter) for the tire side to make one complete turn . To my understanding this would indicate not a 3:08, but moreso a 4:11. Am I right in this? Please tell me what you think or are sure of. I tried to load a pic but the internet is being stupid and won't let me do it. TIA Andy
That sounds about right.
The best way to tell would be to pull the rear cover off and check , while the rear is already out. Cant hurt to check the rest if the diff parts since its on the ground already.
