This brings back bad memories. My control module said goodbye on a bridge in Pittsburgh in the middle lane of bumper to bumper traffic on a Friday in rush hour. Lets just say I could have paid for a frame off restoration for every middle finger or "you suck" i got waiting on a tow truck. In the midst of my waiting i also decided to slam my finger in my car door trying to diagnose why she quit on me....it cost more for the Dr bill than the ecm....smh...long story short, replaced the ECM and then she ran like you stated. I tried replacing with a different ECM and still had the same issue. My last resort was to pull the whole distributor and put a new one in, and she came back to life. Spend the 150 on a new one, or pay to get yours completely rebuilt.

Take a peek at the two wires in the distributor that connect the variable reluctance sensor to the ignition module. Over the years those wires will fatigue and open circuit, causing the engine to die or fall on its face under acceleration when the vacuum advance canister causes the "breaker plate" to rotate.
