I'm replacing the starter in my 77 vette but ill start at the beginning... ok.... I have a 67 firebird..both cars have hi torque mini starters.. I wired an external solenoid on the firewall to help with hot start issues on the bird.. the positive cable from the battery runs to one side of it... out the other side to the starter.. the ignition is wired to the S terminal and the big and small post on the starter have a jumper.. I thought this was the only way... until, I just went to replace the starter in the vette.. the positive battery cable runs right to the starter.. the small terminal on the starter runs to the big post on the solenoid and S terminal to ignition.... is there a correct way? or are both ways ok??? thanks
I like the original small light gauge purple wire going to the small "S" terminal on the relay. No cutting on original harness.
Only need to fab up 2 light gauge wires on the large aftermarket relay terminals. Run one of those new wires to the large battery cable lug on the starter and the other light gauge wire runs from large relay lug to the original starter solenoid "S" terminal. No heavy battery cable modifications required.
Aftermarket Relay gets signal from key, sends full 12V signal to original starter solenoid, solenoid pulls in and car starts.
If your car will crank when hot if you short out the small "S" wire terminal to the battery voltage lug with a screwdriver, this a solution.
