Default HOT ROD Power Tour 2017, "Official CF thread", count down begins....

HRPT 2017 is less then a month out... I've already started prepping the car. Just a couple things left to do on my list. I'll be long hauling my 71' bringing my 65 year old Dad along for the ride.

Who else is coming and what are you bringing?

Car/prep pics are welcome!

I started out this season with checking out my rear diff side yoke play on the Mike Dyers built Super 10 bolt.... After 7 years, 18k miles and 80+ 1/4 mile passes in the 10s, its still in spec..

Fresh fluid and cleaned her up a bit....

Also replaced my wiper door switch (since my then new Wilcox switch crapped out half way on my road trip in 15').

Also tightened all of the belts, checked everything over well, greased the front end etc.. I just need to do an oil/filter change, fresh plugs and MAYBE jet down the carb a bit and I think she is ready...

Gotta start packing as well....Here was my pack job from my 2015 road trip.

Pack job for the HRPT 17' trip should be about the same, but I'm also bringing a spare fan motor, fuel pump rebuild kit and spark plugs (gapped & ready to go in). I'll also bring more oil this time...

I'm just doing St. Louis- Indy and Bowling Green this year. I did 14-15-16 as a longhauler- but we are taking a break this year.

Here's the "official" route this year-

We actually got married last year- at the kick off in Gonzales LA on the Hotrod Power Tour Stage!!

I figured over 3000 miles in a week- My 73 with no luggage rack- 3.55 gears- no AC- And after that we were still together -she's a keeper!!!

Poured down rain when we got on stage!!!!

We sort of cheated last year- as we went in her brand new California Special Mustang- It's plan B this year-

In '15 -unfortunately (or fortunately!!!) my 73's motor made it 25 miles from home HOWEVER the flat bed had AC- so all was good!!!

It's getting new front suspension-radiator- new engine-5 speed and hopefully AC...

Here's the Longhauler T-shirt- the car is "Kid Cadillac's " -he was the ordained minister that married us-

I remember hearing about a couple getting married on the tour last year...Thats freakin awesome!

So the 73' made 3k miles of the trip and crapped out 25 miles from home? (or is my reading comprehension as bad as I think it is?)

What happened to the motor?

I only made the Houston stop at Royal Purple Raceway last year, I couldnt get off from work for anything else. Ironically, I was in my wife's 16 SS Camaro last year at RPR.

I'll be working on mine in the next couple weeks finishing up the prep. I'll update with some pics and info for other future "long haulers".

THANKS-

Yep- I bought the car less than a month before the HRPT 2014- went over it- new trailing arms-gas line-carb-brake lines-shocks-etc Supposedly the engine had been rebuilt - but it only had 900 miles since the PO had it gone through. I'm thinking the mechanic just pulled it apart- didn't machine anything and slapped some parts on it. I was smoking- and I figured the rings weren't seated- had good compression- no smoke on start up- only when it was warm...anyway it drove fine for 3000+ miles.

Did several other trips- Seiverville TN Corvette show- just annoying smoke- for another couple thousand miles

Then HRPT 2015- my 71 was not going to be finished- so the 73 would do it again. A quart a 1000 miles no big deal. Got to Wisconsin Kick Off and it was ticking- everybody said- Oh my chevy 350 made a lot more noise and I drove it for years...

After getting to St Louis- I knew it was in the bottom end- so I just nursed till we got to Birmingham- then decided to bail and head home to Atlanta.

The oil pressure was getting lower and the rolling hills headed into Atlanta- was really knocking going up- then I'd coast down the hill.

At 25 miles out - I decided I didn't want a rod exiting the block- pulled of the highway and rolled into a Gas Station- then called AAA.
This is really loose-

BTW- all the stuff I put in my sparetire carrier- I double wrapped in heavy duty garbage bags. Originally to keep water out- but also roadkill- thanks to that turtle I took out somewhere in northern Indiana- as he cracked the fiberglass!!!

I know Chris "Madhatr" is bringing his 'dirtball' 77 for the longhaul-

Here he is in Memphis replacing a brake caliper- carries jackstands where the muffles use to be!!!

I know Brent319 will be at at least one stop- as the tour goes a mile from his house.

I'm sure there will be several other- in 2014 Champaign ill- I met Charlie "73ls1" - "Jason Staley" and George "Glinares" who brought me a center cap to the one I lost -thanks the the tire place.

Hopefully some more will chime in-

Richard

I'm in for the long haul, coming out of Cedar Park TX. I would like to meet up with you and talk rear ends (cars and girls). The wife and I failed last years tour outside of Wichita KS. Sad story over a cold beer. Only prep work is taking the car out on weekend trips, and fix what breaks. White 73.....

Hell yeah, I love cars and girls.......(don't tell the wife....)

Hopefully a lot of C2/C3 guys can meet up at the various stops... mainly to drink beer and tell tales, hopefully not to work on the cars.

For sure man. I'll be on the look out for C3s, if yours isnt there, and you see my ole green pile, stop by and say hi.... I'll be drinking a beer with everyone.

I'm hoping to see a lot of classic vettes on the tour...hopefully its not just all new models everywhere....(although my new one is my Plan B )

This will be my 12th Hot Rod Power Tour and I've had a great time on all of them. I've taken a 69 Chevelle, 2006 Vette, 2015 Vette and this year I'm going retro again with my 71 Vette.

I highly recommend going on the Tour, it's great in so many ways. First it's a great reason to drive your Vette and you do it with 3,000 to 5,000 other cars. Everyone says they could do the same thing themselves but most never do. Sign up for the Tour and then you make plans to do it. The Venues are fun, they're doing a better job picking 2 lane roads and one of my favorite parts is the gathering in the hotel parking lots at the end of the day. There's nothing like sitting around in lawn chairs next to a cooler BSing with other car guys.

The Power Tour doesnt come to Baytown this year... That was last year only.

This year it STARTS in Kansas City MO..... I'll be leaving League City on the 8th, just to make sure I have time for the ride and not have to be thrashing to get there.
