so i decided to polish my rims today , what a project ! you can see in the first pic all the supplies i needed to use . aircraft stripper really sucks as it gets sticky and hard to get off the rim so i got some paint thinner ( the rims were clearcoated at some point) , also i noticed that the 320 wet-paper was a bit much , so on the rest of the rims i will use 600 - 1000 - 1500 . 2 coats of mothers seem to work great . i bet your all wondering what the corn starch is for ; well i hear that after the mothers application get a soft towel soaked in cornstarch to soak up the excess. picking up all the supplies this morning the whole project cost about $42 . b4 mothers polish what a difference.....well gtg finish the other rims for now , was so excited had to let everyone know , thanks for listenin.
That MOTHERS mag/aluminum polish is really good stuff. I used that on my rims. Mothers & Rags was all I used along with A LOT of elbow grease. And you're right, the finished product is really amazing. I had to do mine while they were on the car still so it was a little more difficult.
Only problem was, the next time the rims got wet all the water spots came back. heh. Are there any methods to protect the rim from waterspots and what not?
-btw, you should really try some of that spray you put on your tires and it makes them nice and black. it works really good and makes your tires look amazing.
PS...the guy that owns the local harley shop (a customer of mine) is going to polish my wheels next week at $10 a pop...i saw some he has done and they look darn near like chrome...
when we talked about polish i mentioned that the bikers that i have known in the past (no...not the hel ls angel type bikers) used to use mothers he said that most no longer do because it dosnt last...
he showed me what is comonly used now and i cant remember the name of it but it comes in a tube like toothpaste...
he said that once a month or so you either hit it with the car wash wand on "wax" setting or put a coat of regular auto wax on it occationaly and they will stay shiny for a very long time...
if anyone would like the name of it i can find out for you...
Looks great. I did something very similar a few years back. This year I decided to freshen them up and did all 4 in an hour with a drill and a tube of simichrome.
i tell you this much , i managed to get them all done just as it started getting dark outside. i did do them on the car which made it extremely difficult , also it was a total waste of time and $ for the aircraft stripper , after the 2nd rim i stoped using it , laquer thinner was a waste of time aswell , the rest of the rims were done straight up with 600 wet paper 1k and 15oo . i am so amazed !!! to answer a few posts , my arms and wrists are fine , my fingers ( thumbs especially ) are numb from the sandpaper the only thing that aches is my back ( my massus will be here shortly ). i couldnt find the simichrome , i know how everyone here feels about mothers so i got that , and if you can get them done for $10 a pop i wish you would have told me this at 11 o`clock this morning.....ill post some pics tomorrow in daylight. thanks all for letting me share in my joy :hat
armorall & windows will be done tomorrow , the tint is quite old so , im gonna have to update it . just not sure if i want black or silver tint......hehe........
