its tight but it will come from the top.. buy one from a reputable vendor, i bought one from ebay and the sending unit sticks, never goes below 3/8 of a tank if it even works.

In a word, No. However, with that said I have seen a couple C3s that had the tank either replaced or out of the car for some reason and when reinstalled it was not done correctly and it made it impossible to get the unit out the top of the tank without loosening things on the tank and re-positioning it. This would be somewhat rare I would think, but it does happen.
It's a really simple task really if everything goes well, it helps if you have "chicken feathers and do a little dance" while removing. OK, just kidding, you do have to turn and twist the unit while pulling it out though. As mentioned, replace all the rubber parts while your at it. Check the pump hose as well and maybe replace that one while you have it out, use FUELLINE hose, not just any rubber hose. Good luck.
