I'm in the process of replacing the rear body mount caps (#4 and #8) on my '79. The old ones were basically disintegrated so I don't have them for reference. Anyway, I ordered them from one of the many corvette vendors and after fit checking them, I am concerned there may be some issues. When I put the end cap in place, there is some gap (2 - 3 mm) between the horizontal tangs and the fiberglass. When I place the vertical tangs flat against the fiberglass mount post, the holes do not line up well. I think I can get the bolt through, but it will be on the edge of the cap hole. Finally, none of the cap holes line up with the original holes in the car.
Has anyone else dealt with this, and how did you handle it? I'm considering the following options:
Bending the tangs to close the gap.
Adding fiberglass to close the gaps including glassing over the holes and drilling them in the new location.
I'm leaning towards the second option because bending the tangs doesn't allow them to set flush against the surface. I'm using the soft body rivets and am concerned that unless the tangs sit flush against a surface, the rivets will fatigue.
Again, I'm interested in whether anyone else has had this issue. Thanks.
