Hey guys,
Does anyone have a good procedure for replacing the side yokes on the rear end? I noticed some play while I was checking my brakes. Any tips or suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Christ
I pulled the differential with the cross member to do it. You'll need a really good pair of snap ring pliers. I broke a cheap set trying to take the snap rings off the end of the splined shaft.
Before pulling the rear end out, which you'll have to do to replace them, check the actual movement. I like to do it with the 1/2 shaft disconnected and and indicator placed against the yoke. If you have less then .040-045" I wouldn't bother, you maight go as high as .080" but anything over that and I would change them.
You have to remove the rear end and then the cover to change them. that leads to just how much of the yoke ground down into the rear end as chips. A lot of times the rear is worn and rebuilding it is advisable.
Sears have a good psir of snap ring pliers. I have a pr of pliers I got 25 years ago at a bearing house. they are fixed tips and look cheap but they are the best I found over the years. I haven't found them anywhere for years so Sears may be the best place to look.
