The last piece of the puzzle on my restoration is my '76 steering column.I dont care about originality on this.Should I have mine rebuilt or replace w/new aftermarket. The cost is about the same. With a new one its plug n play, the original is hurry up and wait, plus I can use aftermarket wheels on the new one...
It all depends on what is actually wrong with your column now.
I rebuild columns on the Corvettes that I restore and in about 90%+ of the columns I can use them and NOT have to replace the column itself.
I have never priced out aftermarket columns....nor have I never had to install one so I can not comment on how well they fit and how close to being correct they are.
The problems are.. the bottom end has the usual loseness, turn signal return broke and the tilt doesnt go to the lowest position.I was told that if the tilt is broke the whole lower end of the column needs to be replaced? What say you? Thanks
Finished my column short time ago, I had to tig weld the end of the column ware the
lock plate bolts in no big deal, also bored out tilt and put hard bushings in. Like new now only better the tilt pins turn in bushings and not the alum.tilt housing.

It all depends IF the portion of the mast jacket tube that aids in holding the plate that the aluminum pivot knuckle screws to is torn.
I have also welded that back and got the column tight. So it depends on the extent of the damage.
The turn signal switch of me is a no-brainer...due to I have replaced countless turn signal switches.
