OK, I guess that's not the problem..............but that push rod doesn't look right. Maybe there's some casting flash in that passage??

It may have been caused by my hasty installation. I think that the rod wasn't sitting correctly on the pump lever which put pressure on the rod. On the engine side the rod was worn on the bottom. On the pump side it was on the top.
