Have an 82 Corvette. I am going to replace the transmission filter and pan gasket. The manual says to use DEXTRON II. I can not seem to locate a DEXTRON II. Therefore, what make and type of transmission fluid do you recommend.? Thanks
I did the same a couple of weeks ago to my '82. After plenty of research, including my strong desire to use a synthetic ATF, I landed on the 5Q bottle of Valvoline synthetic. It comes in a large red bottle, widely available, and clearly identifies its DexII compatibility. Yes, it is compatible with the non-synthetic ATF left in your transmission after pulling/draining the pan. By the way, pick up an extra quart of the same ATF. Naturally, the 5-Qt. Bottle wouldn't quite do the refill job, requiring most of another quart.
I would recommend Transynd 295... It is what is used in the Allison transmissions. I have personally spoken to the Allison engineer (Tom Johnson) the spec'd and certified all authorized suppliers. I used it in my 1983 Monte Carlo SS 350 turbo trans with no issues. The biggest issue is cost... $40 a gal. When switching for Dex?? to Transynd 295 it is recommended that you do a double change. First drain and filter change, put a few 100 miles and then a second drain and fill. this will get you a 99% Transynd solution.
OBTW - I used this in my Tremec 6060 in my Challenger 6 speed and my neighbors Camaro SS 6 speed.

Thanks for the info. How many quarts of fluid do I need to refill after I remove the pan, drain the existing fluid and then intstall a new filter and gasket? thnaks
Check the owners manual... I had an 82 and changed it... But, that was many years back and I don't remember the number of qt's. Getting old sucks. lol
TIP - DO NOT use a rubber gasket. I went thru this on my 83 Monte and could not get to seal and not leak. I even fuba'dr a really nice aluminum pan trying to get it to seal. Get a CORK or COMPOSITE gasket and install it dry.
Just sent Tom a note and asked about using Transynd 295 in my 08... His reply, Yup it will work just fine.
OBTW - If your looking for a place to have you fluids tested I have use 2 places. 1. Blackstone Labs 2. JG Lubricants
JG Lubricants is owned by Tom. I have used both and either is good.
