I just got my headlights functioning mechanically after replacing a number of vacuum lines, both relays, a "T" fitting and rebuilding actuators. They work fine with the switch but the red "Headlamp" light in my center console also turns on with the lights. Is this supposed to happen, or is the light only meant to come on when the lights are left on wihen the ignition turns off? The alarm buzzer functions properly if the lights are left on with ignition off. 1975 if it makes any difference...Thank for your input.
There is a switch on the headlight mechanism that shuts off when the headlights are fully open. Kind of like an "IN-Transit" alert. The switches are plastic and easy to break. Sorry I don't have a good picture, but the switches are about 3/4 x 1 and have a 2 wire connector. They are attached to the links on the buckets- not hard to find.
Note that when you install the new switch, just snug down the nut that holds it in place - they are very easy to break as mentioned above. I suggest replacing the switches for both headlights at the same. I replaced the passenger side one on a 76 I had at one time, and a week afterward the driver side went. Plastic can get brittle with age.
Thanks all! I recognize the switch now as I remember installing it in the incorrect orientation early on. If I recall, when the light bucket flips up, a portion of the bracket is supposed to depress the switch and turn the light off? I will look at my AIM to see if the exploded view shows the correct orientation. I do remember putting the passenger side together and referencing the driver side for the corrrect orientation.

Until I am able to investigate and either reorient the switch to it's proper position or replace as needed, can I disconnect the harness from the switch? Or will that keep the console light on?

As I recall unplugging the switch will make the light go off.
