My 69 wiper door just won't go down, changed out the valve that is activated by the wipers being in the off position but it just stays open. Trying for some input prior to digging in any further, any help appreciated. Wipers work no problem but door will not close, if you try to force it closed it resists. I am firing this guy up after a 18 year shutdown, when I first ran the wipers it opened and closed. Now it just opens, also when I bought the car in 73 the door never opened all the way, you would have to reach out the window and finish opening it in order to get the wipers to work, I lived with it for 26 years but I was younger then.
Hi Don,
There are several things that could cause the wiper door to remain open.
The wiper door vacuum over-ride switch located below the steering column could be pulled. When the 'stalk' on this switch is pulled the door opens and remains open until the stalk is pushed back up.
The wiper door safety switch located in the wiper bay on the right side must be triggered by a lever on the wiper transmission that occurs only when the wiper arms are in the 'park' position. This prevents the door from 'crunching' down on the wiper arms that haven't parked. It could be defective even if just replaced.
The wiper 'relay' mounted on the right side apron could not be functioning so the vacuum signal to close the door isn't being sent to the door actuator.
The 'close' side of the wiper door actuator could be leaking.
Do you have a vacuum pump with a gauge (like a mity-vac) that you can use to begin testing these parts in order to see what's working and what's not?
Regards,
Alan
