When I start my own personal project from hell this winter, I'm going to replace my almost 40 year old harmonic balancer, so I have an associated dumb question: is the L82 crank internally balanced from the factory or do I need to buy an external balance harmonic balancer?
I've swapped a 6-3/4 balancer for an 8" one countless times. Just need to get the correct timing pointer for the balancer. THE 8" has a little more mass/inertia.

Its.always better to use the correct balancer. The extra mass controls the harmonics better at higher rpm.
Update: Well, I went overboard, but I got the SFI ATI Super Damper from a guy on ThirdGen for $160, so I couldn't say no... Way better than I needed but, I'll take it.
you do know the damper is smaller than what you have now and may cause you problems trying to line up your timing mark with the pointer on the timing cover?

I think I'm too dumb to fully understand the implications...
The dampener is only a VERY little much smaller than the one I have.
I didn't even know that these cars cam with a timing marker (never noticed mine) I have no understanding of how to setup timing so it's never occurred to me.
I will be doing a head, cam, lifter, push rod, timing chain, timing cover, and harmonic balancer replacement starting this winter. My thought is that while I'm doing all of that, I can just move the timing pointer to where it's supposed to go, right?
People replace harmonic balancers all the time, it can't be that hard, right? -Am I missing something obvious?
perhaps the word pointer was incorrect, I meant the timing tab, with the numbers. Typically it is a fraction of an inch away from the balancer and when setting the mark/iine on the balancer to the number on the tab your viewing orientation/angle to the tab has no consequence. Unless you have a way of moving whatever timing tab you intend to install on the engine close to the balancer your viewing orientation/angle will effect the accuracy of your timing initial or total adjustment.

Thanks for that, I think I get it now.
What is the fix?
Do I just buy a timing pointer tab that's made to work with my new balancer and install it per the instructions and I'm good?
I have another dumb question that I probably should've figured out before I bought the thing: I noticed that ATI sells a version of the Super Damper that they say is for Serpentine belts; does that mean that you can only run a serpentine pulley setup with a serpentine-specific damper or why would they even sell such a thing?
The link you provided further up in this thread was for a stock multi-belt drive like your l-82. That is what you bought, correct? You did not buy a balancer for a serpentine drive, correct?
