I was driving for a long-ish period of time (4 hours), about 190 miles. About 5 miles away from home, it seemed I had lost something from the car I checked in the mirror and the piece looked about 3 inches big (but it could have been something already lying there) and after a mile I slowed down on traffic lights and heard this.
It is coming from the engine and I am affraid it is one of the pistons. I keep having a problem with losing oil but at that time, it was ok. Mind you, newly rebuilt engine (5k miles). Just wondering if any of you engine gurus would have an opinion, what could be wrong.
I was on the highway so I couldn't stop to see what the object was. Something like a tube, but really a wild guess. Next time I am in the garage, I will take a video, I was not able to see any strange behaviour from the outside, though. The sound is taken from inside and than outside closer to the engine. I hear a metal rubbing noise.
From what I could see in the video, your flywheel cover is missing. A better video would help. Move the camera more slowly, and show everything from the radiator, fan, and belts all the way back to the tranny. I couldn't see if your belts were there and moving. My buddy had his harmonic balancer come off at 6000 rpm. Made a hell of a racket but didn't hurt anything else as it went out the bottom and down the road.
