Default Firewall insulation pics please

Does anyone have a pic of the original factory type firewall insulation installed, particularly around the pedal area? Then one I purchased is supposed exact as the original made by a company called Northern Star and just can't see how this should fit around the pedals.

Thanks in advance

Hi r,
The installation of the insulation blanket around the steering column is one of those "sweet mysteries of life".

The best representation of it's original configuration, placement, and fastener location, I'm aware of, is in the AIM. For 71 it's shown in UPC1 asm, Sheet D9.

Regards,
Alan

The AIM makes it look all too simple but, it doesn't show how the the gas pedal is installed around it. Should the pedal come thru that small square on the right and the cable hang over the insulation? It also doesn't show how the 3 hole grommet for vacuum hoses or the 4 hole grommet for tach cable, oil pressure etc. should be routed. Do they hang over the top of the insulation? Doesn't seem very insulating. Neither the AIM illustration or the piece I purchased show provisions for the grommets.

Hi r,
I'm sorry, I thought the AIM drawing was a pretty good representation.
The grommets are shown on the AIM sheet, item #4.
Perhaps knowing the year of your car might be good to know.
Without seeing what you bought it's difficult to offer advice.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a photo to help you with your installation.
Regards,
Alan

I appreciate your help, it's a '68 but I figured it'd be a lot harder to get a pic for that exact year. I see that different years shapes vary but they all have gas pedals.
Here's a pic from Corvette America catalog it has a shiny plastic-like back, not so easy to reshape.

r

Here a couple pictures I have on disk that of that area. Not sure if you can really tell anything from them, but take a look.

The first two picture are of a 68 and the second two of the 69. Both have the original insulation and carpet in them. You can see the assembly line was pretty sloppy in this area. I'm sure whatever you end up doing it will look 100 times better.

John,
Looks like there isn't any insulation around the gas pedal. I had thought the gas pedal pivot went thru that square cut out in the insulation.

Larry

It sure looks from the pictures of my two cars they didn't use the square hole for the gas pedal and simply cut that area away. Only thing I can think of was the original plan was to have the gas peddle go through the square hole and than it was found out it didn't work well on the assembly line. The quick solution was to use a knife.

You'll also notice it doesn't look like the insulation goes to the left side of the steering column on either car.

I can't go look at the 68 to get more info for you as the car is in AZ and I'm in WI for the summer. I sold the 69 last year.

Mine didn't have any in that area either. I just assumed that a previous owner had torn It away to gain access back there, since the rubber retainers were in the firewall.

Hopefully we can get another 68 owner or two to report what they have.

Yes, can't see having to cut up a $350 part.
