Clicking / slippage - under torque - no noise
'Looking for diagnostic opinions. '68 4 speed, 327. At very slow speed (<5 mph), intermittently, when the car is under strong 'torque', for example, a steep hill, I feel a mechanical click / pop / slip. No noise. No feeling in the steering wheel. Seems to 'well up' through the seat. Upon examination, the half shafts feel tight with no play. Main drive shaft had a little play so I replaced with heavy duty Moog. Symptoms did not go away. Thoughts?

Transmission mount(s), motor mount or engine to bell housing connection loose, come to mind to check.

Thanks for the ideas. . . . and I should add I don't really feel any 'slip' as in a slowing of forward motion. Also, sometimes the mechanical 'click' or 'pop' occurs a few times (e.g., pop, pop, pop), and others, there are several more, say six to eight - always in rapid succession. When it occurs, the occurrence of pops within a series is regular and is always the same interval - - about three per second. The feeling reminds me of when I was a kid and the chain on my bike would slip on the cog, catching each tooth as it kept sliding, except in this case, the car maintains all power and forward motion, hence my original belief it was the universal joints.

Could try changing the rear diff fluid and adding limited slip additive.

I finally changed the differential fluid. Only five cups came out, so it was very low. I used two bottles of AC Delco Limited Slip Additive and Lucas 85w -140. Plug came off easily making me wonder who has been there before. Just did a half dozen figure eights and went up the driveway without a single pop. Thanks! Keep your fingers crossed.
