Default Original radio issues

Hi., Have '72 with original am/fm mono radio that gets staticky when lights turned on. New 10 ohm speakers, new wiring from Ecklers, radio grounded. It almosts sounds like break in a wire and causes radio sound to go on - off when wiring jiggled.
Suggestions besides replacing with new unit?
Thanks for input

Noisy output can be due to a number of things, but I suspect that some capacitors in the radio have good bad over the years. The electrolytics tend to dry out with age. If you are hearing 'ignition noise' (when the engine is running), noise suppression capacitors need to be installed (per factory design) in & around the ignition system.

Thank you. I think I'll do another bench test and work backwards from there . If problem persists afterwards I may have radio rebuilt or install secondary system and keep original for looks.
Thanks again

Listening to non-stereo FM might be 'nostalgic', but that wouldn't do it for me. If you want to maintain the original 'look', maybe look into getting your mono-FM unit rebuilt with modern stereo electronics. Cost to get your mono unit rebuilt will not be that much different from having it overhauled up to modern standards.

Just sayin'.....
