My 77 4 speed has always shifted into gear without issues however just recently, when shifting into reverse, the shifter is hitting the console. Is there an adjustment to the linkage that is needed?
Hi HB,
While an adjustment of the linkage may be required… perhaps the reverse rod clevis has become worn where the 'pin' goes through it … the chassis service manual also suggests that the front of the shifter mounting bracket can be shimmed with a couple of washers to 'tip' the bracket to the rear slightly.
Regards,
Alan
thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that there is different setups for short throw. Not sure what mine is set at. I'll need to do some more research.
Hi HB,
I believe you'll find that the reverse lever typically has only one position for the rod's clevis connection.
That's why I suggested looking for a worn clevis or thinking about shimming the shifter bracket.

Alan
If it is hitting the side, there is a certain amount of wiggle room with all the connections the transmission makes to the chassis. Loosening, moving the transmission over, and retightening everything may fix your problem with a relative minimum of effort.
Isn't the shifter bolted to a bracket which is bolted to the crossmember, it is on my 69, don't know about a 77. Loosening the bracket mounting bolts and moving the bracket and shifter to the right should do the trick. But we don't know where the op shifter is hitting.
Thanks everyone. Alan is likely right about a worn part. The shifter hits on the front of the console. It does not affect getting the transmission into reverse but seems like it has a lot of slop in the travel. The other gears seem fine. Also, I definitely do not have the short throw setup. Just got back from a nice ride up the Mohawk Trail in Western Mass and was more conscious of the shifting. The travel is quite long. A shorter throw sound like it may be fun. We have only had the corvette for a little less than a year so still in a steep learning curve. Thanks again for your insight.
