A previous owner had expressed an interest in possibly buying the car back. It was his first car, and honeymooned with it. Now many years later he has seen the car in better shape than when he sold it. Last week he called again and asked if I might be interested in selling it to him. I told him I had some thoughts of possibly moving on with another project. I told him I wanted between 14 & 15K. He said the car meant a lot to him and would like to have it back. What would you do?
Ultimately, it is your car and your decision. I know sometimes people have changes of heart, but at the same time, he did sell the car at some point. Who knows, maybe I'll be forced to sell mine someday.
On the other hand, my car was a graduation gift. I can remember riding in the back (yeah on the rear compartments) as a very young child. So, my car means a lot to me. In fact, right now, you would have to offer me AT LEAST $100,000 for it. And yes, I do know it is only worth maybe $6,000. If I were forced to sell it and found it later, I would do everything possible to get it back.
So, you asked:
Would you sell?
I would sell the car if I knew I could get the money I want for it. AND if and only if the car had no real monumental value to me.
I would sell it (or mine in the same situation) in a heartbeat for the following reasons:
1. As much as I love my vette, it clearly means more to him than it means to me.
2. He is willing to pay above market value for the car.
3. Mainly based on info obtained on the forum I feel I now have the info needed to pick up a good value for $$ vette, maybe something a little different from what I have.
hell no. but that is my situation. It is my first Vette, my first car that I've really liked, and he's getting a 50th anniv. edition so screw him!! hehe. Now if he offered a trade... I think it would still count as my first Vette cuz it's from the same person. How about that rationalization?
Bottom line, you love it? Keep it. Want to get a good deal? Sell it.
If he would give me between 14-15k for a 75 L-48, I'd personally sell it and not look back and start looking for another vette. Unless the vette you currently have is the one you always wanted. If someone offered me enough for my 73BB, that I could easily buy a 69BB convertible in the same condition with similiar options I'd sell it.
Sell it. Im sure there's another year or color vette you want more, and even if there isnt, buy one similar and drop the extra money in it. its like hes buying you a nicer vette.
for mine, someone would probably have to offer me a good, ooohhh 50K. thats about double what ive put into it, so for that i could buy 1 and do the same stuff, for less because i would avoid the $$$ mistakes, and have enough left over for a 68 427 convertable. or at least most of what it would cost. so i could have one custom and one original. best of both worlds :smash:
I agree with everyone here. If someone wants a car bad enough to offer better than market, I would first look to see what I could get to replace what you have, then I would sell and go shopping for a new love.
I would be much more likely to sell it to a previous owner - since this buyer isn't going anywhere - I'd suggest finding something you like as much or more before letting this one go. Might be a perfect opportunity to get a convertible, chrome bumper, or another one just like the one you have now.
I could be in the same situation, as the previous owner of mine is local. The answer is YES.
For that matter, I received an email off my site asking me to let him know when I was ready to sell. My response - the car will not be for sale unless I have no choice, BUT the right offer will buy you a 1970 LT-1.

Re: Would you sell? (HEARTBEATUSA)
I would sell it... that is a great deal and the guy obviously loves the car enough to pay more than fair market value for it. You know it would be going to a good home.
bl75vette - IMO the market is real soft at the moment. If you really want to sell it.....seize the opportunity. I sold my'71 a few weeks ago and there was not an over abundance of people with cash!!!!
