Or pay about $10 for a new one, install is pretty easy. Is the clicking coming from under the car? If so I'd recommend getting a new cable because that is the cable slipping in the plastic gear in the transmission which I would imagine eventually ruin that as well.
Mine was clicking after my original cable broke and it turns out that my cruise control is locking up so I just ran the cable straight from trans to speedo.
I believe the bouncing is an indicator that the speedo cable is on the way out. Mine did that for about a year before the speech actually stopped working. I'd just buy a new one rather than try to fix it.
I wish I would have paid attention to this when my speedo stopped working, but am I correct in assuming that the speedo cable also controls the odometer?
My '79 had the TH350 (automatic) and If I recall correctly the only connections to the transmission were the cable connecting the shifter to the trans, a vacuum hose, the speedo cable, and a kick-down cable that connected to the throttle linkage on the carberator. So the odometer would have to be driven by the speedometer cable??
