Default Starter grind

I have a 1970 454 390+ It's been rebuilt, I put a new starter on its shimmed right its never been started. When I try to start it I get a loud screech, grind noise., and no start. I have battery, gas, and spark. I'm wondering if I have too much compression, or a bad flex plate. I never had a big block before so Please help if you can. thanks tp

Can you detail what procedure you followed to shim it? Did it need any shims?

So---does the engine turn over or do you just get noise without any spin? If you just get noise, I'd be inclined to think the starter teeth are not engaging the flywheel correctly.
Maybe the starter shim thing is not right. Out of 3 or 4 starters I've only had to shim one.

I my have found the problem, I looked, someone else shimmed, there is too much gap. What I believe happened is the flex plate is from a small block.
