How can I prove that ID#CE863882 stamped on the front of the block is a L-88 Short Block?
Thx
You can't.
The CE code is a over the counter warranty exchange block code.
If someone had a real L88 and blew the motor during the warranty, Chevy would have used any 4 bolt main 512 block and stuck the correct L88 internals in it.

This ID# won't even tell me the year I purchased the crate motor either?
Great news, was considering buying a 68 and building a tribute car. Need to think this over now, Thx for the quick feed back.

small block CE engines will be date stamped on the starter mount pad. IIRC it was applied to big blocks also?

Im not meaning this smart *** at all, things get lost in type, but isnt by defination a "tribute" just a more noble way of saying poser, so who cares if the l88 engine is a real factory one, pretty darn sweet to me to even have a fresh built l88 that wasnt a gm build,
I have no issues building my fake road race themed 69 and calling it a poser,
But i will grin a little each time some cat asks me if i found an old face car in a barn and got it running,
Dont give up on the project just because of the engine,
Heck, there's an l88 listed for sale on here,

In todays world of easily re stamped serial numbers buyers are more interested in the date codes anyway. Just go to one of the major Auctions and as a valuable collector car is getting close to the block everybody has the flashlight looking down at the Bell Housing area.
I'm in the same situation. I have a 69 L88 that I am going to restore. Only problem is I have no way of proving it left the factory as an L88 or any other engine. I'd love to prove it one way or another but I have exhausted my re sources trying. I know where the Car was sold and that Dealer is long gone. I talked to the owner who had it in 1985 but I have no clue what happened in between. So far I have nothing to prove it was not an L88 so that is the route I intend to follow.

Mr. Banks, if you could keep us posted on your build in would much appreciated. It looks like we're going to put ours on hold for now, not
sure if we want to make an investment not able to prove the L88 side
of the deal.
By any chance, have you ever been involved with turbo's?
Thx. My email is Hilstreet427@yahoo.com. 916-216-6717
My 75 vert is gonna have chrome bumpers and 454 with rectangle heads. The mercruiser dual plane is exact match for L88 intake. I'm gonna call it a wannabe. check the hood corners. next time somebody post "HELP, I CANT OPEN MY HOOD!" I will post a close-up of it.

I was going after the L88 look on my poser 68.
Its not original by any means, but I don't care and thats all that matter to me.

it is a CE short block. date code on the block. part numbers on the pistons, rods, crank, cam. it they are all correct and still stock bore, it IS for all intents-purposes a CE L88.
counter engines were built to whatever specs the customer required. or over-built. they would have used a 512 4 bolt for a 2-bolt build if that is what they had laying around. but few people would put the steel crank and correct pistons-rods into a block to fake an L88 and install used bearings cuz they had the correct dates on them...
