Default Help With Exhaust Install, Please...

I'm having a hell of a hard time. A project that I though should be pretty straightforward has turned into a real struggle.

I am installing a used but almost new dual exhaust on my '78 SA.

I got the drivers side on with a little persuasion, but it's on. The passenger side has been a nightmare. The pipe doesn't seem to line up properly.

My fear is that I have the pipes that come off of the manifolds on backwards. There are only 4 pipes, the two that go to the mufflers are easy, the two off the manifolds could be wrong because they are similar. I DONT want to have to tear apart the drivers side, but if they're backwards, I have no choice.

Does anyone have pictures from the underside of the car attaching to the manifolds?

Here is the one I'm was trying to get on to the passenger side. Can anyone tell me by looking at this if it's a drivers side or passenger side pipe?

Is your car an automatic or manual? I believe the front pipes are bent differently based on your transmission type.

Here is a link to the Gardner Exhaust system, your pipes should be similar.

I can't tell from these pictures. Mine is a '78 and these catalogs don't go that high.

Because after 1974 no Corvette came with dual exhaust. So you will need to replicate what the 1968-1974 exhaust systems look like.

Does your car have a heat riser valve on the passenger side? IS the exhaust pipe you are using designed to be used with or without a heat riser valve?

GREAT question. The car HAD a heatriser, there is about a 2" spacer where the heat riser went that I could remove.

This system came off of a '77 but I believe they are the same systems.

Removing the spacer may give me the room I need to make the exhaust fit. It looks like it's only off a little.

Are most system made without the riser???

Is there any way to tell if the pipe pictured is for the passenger side?

This is a 74 dual exhaust system very similar to the one I installed on my 77. The pipe that you show in your post looks like it belongs on the driver side. In the above pic it's easy to see how the front pipes are bent to pass through the crossmember.

I'm almost positive that I have them backwards.

The bend should go in not out.

Does anyone have a picture of their exhaust from underneath at the manifold?

This is from my 68. You can see the right head pipe goes back and then bends in to the inside. Hope this is helpful.

No problem. If you haven't already done so, you should pick up the AIM and chassis service manual for your Corvette. I use mine all the time.

I absolutely had it backwards. I took out the drivers side that I already installed and switched the pipes off of the manifold.

Funny how the exhaust pipes seemed to slide right into place when I did that.

Took her for a ride around the block and blew a radiator hose when I got home. Haha, always something I suppose.

For some reason my idle is very high. I think that may have contributed to the hose blow, but I doubt it. I gotta get my idle down.

Anyway, MY EXHAUST IS INSTALLED AND SOUNDS GREAT!

Thanks for your help!

Very nice of you to say, thank you.

I can deal with a blown hose, it could always be worse!

Default Magnaflow

I have a question regarding Redwingvette's Magnaflow exhaust. I am a newer owner of a really nice '71, 350 4 speed convertible. Luv it luv it luv it.
The only downside is the exhaust note just doesnt work for me. It has a very well done 2-1/2" SS system all the way back, - but runs through Borla mufflers. I can live it for a while but at some point they're gonna have to come off.
How did you decide on Magnaflow? I like to have a solid exhaust note, but not NOISE. I generally prefer the Magnaflow muffler but might want the Vette to be a tad quieter still. Paragon advertises a near stock 'off road' muffler whereby one baffle is supposedly left out and generates 'less exhaust back pressure and deeper sound quality'. Anyone have any experience with that?
Many thanks!
