Default 1970 Speedometer and Cable questions

In the midst of getting ready to start trouble shooting a bouncy speedo on a 1970 4sp LS5, two questions.
1. I see both two piece and one piece cables advertised for this car, my AIM is currently buried in a box, buried in a basement, what is correct?
2. I hear a clicking from behind the dash, what are the chances of a bad speedometer vs. cable?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

2 piece cables are used for cars with cruise control.
I'd have to go with a speedo problem, unless your cable is kinked. You can get the cable out without pulling the dash.

Yes, one piece cable. Hopefully just that. You can unhook the cable sheath from behind the speedo by pushing in the tab and pulling back on the cable housing. Then pull out the inner cable from the housing and check it for condition. Unfortunately there are times when the receiver for the cable on the speedometer gets rounded off inside(instead of square) and the cable slips. Have to pull the gauge then and repair.

Hi w,
Here you can see the gray spring steel clip that cg describes. It needs to be depressed to release the cable from the back of the speedometer case.

When re-installing the cable just pushing the cable in place snaps the clip automatically.
Regards,
Alan

Dumb question, does the cable pull out of the sheath at the gauge or trans?

Default cable replacement

can the whole cable be replaced without pulling the dash?
I think my cruise control transducer is shot or dirty, I do not use the cruise. Can I just get a cable from the trans to the speedometer without pulling the dash? Its a 77
thanks
