I want to change my 3.08 diff to a 3.70/3.73. My mechanic quoted this as costing $2000  . $1k for the part and $1k labor. Isn't this a little high? How much could I get by selling off the old one?

Re: Differential cost (aharte)
If you're paying a mechanic to do it then that is in the right price range.
You might want to shop around though just to make sure.
Also, if you are mechanically inclined, you can do it for (guestimate) $800. You can get have your differential rebuilt for $500 ish, it will cost extra to change the ratio.
Very high. A gear set cost about $2oo. You can also buy a complete rebuilt unit with 3.73 for around $800. It is not hard to change the diferential. Of course if you can rebuild it yourself then it would cost maybe $400-$500. Did the same change myself and the difference was amazing. Now it`s time for the Th200-4r as the highway rpm`s are a bit much. :chevy
Ok, thanks. I don't think I could do it myself though. I've never done any significant mechanical work, and although I intend to learn eventually, I don't feel comfortable playing with something this important yet. I also want it done before winter :) .
Try calling Corvette Perfection in Beloit, Wisconsin. Gary gets differentials shipped to him from all over the country for repair. I believe he will sell differentials complete on an exchange basis with any available gear. Here is a link to the web site http://corvetteperfection.com/corvetteperfection001.htm
aharte,
If you are getting new/rebuilt side yokes and seeing how you (really) have no core then $1000 is pretty close BUT $1000 labor is quite high. ...redvetracr
PS: I have a freshly rebuilt 3.55 if your interested

Re: Differential cost (aharte)
Go with the 3.55's. I have the 3.73's in there and I really don't like them. It is a rebuilt case with new bearings, clutch packs and side yokes.
Does anyone know if I can pull the 3.08's out of my original rear unit, sitting on my bench, and put those gears in place of the 3.73's I just had installed ?
I bought my 4.11s off ebay. it was a guy selling em out of his 66, but it was originally out of a 68. i installed it my self total cost was less than $500. i still have my 3.55s to sell.

Re: Differential cost (aharte)
What was wrong with the 3.73's BSeery? I don't care much about 1st gear, so loss of traction there wouldn't bother me.
Unless you like running 3000 RPM at 70 MPH again, stay with the 3.08's or 3.55's. I am going to be pulling mine out as I am topping out 3rd gear in the 1/4 mile.
For me to buy all new parts for my rear (80) including the R & P, posi internals (clutches, spidergears, cross shaft...), carrier, bearings, shims, and had the thing assembled by a local raceshop owner the cost was ~$850, about 600 for all new parts, and 250 for labor (this was with me bringing the entire unit to him, with boxes of new parts). Plus, I expect to be able to sell some of the old parts to some fool on EBAY :D If you are only doing the R & P, I dont see how it could be a thousand for parts.
