Black and sooty equals rich.. There are several thing that can cause this. Check the odvious first. Air cleaner must not be too dirty or the mixture will be rich. The choke may not be opening completly or not opening soon enough. With engine warm the choke blade on the carburetor ( the upper flap on the front portion of the carb) must be COMPLETELY open. Next step would be have someone look at the carburetor for a sticky float or a high or heavy float condition. Next would be the casting plus on the bottom of the carb may be leaking. This would be evidenced buy hard starting after the cars sits for a while and a puff of black smoke on start.
