82 sending unit in 81 now gas gauge pegged???
I put an 82 sending unit in my 81 for fuel injection purposes (in tank pump) and now my gas gauge is pegged and then some??? any ideas on this one? i connected the old sending unit wire up to the new sending unit i am sure there is no short, do i need to add an inline resistor, are the ohm's of resistance different between 81 and 82 sending units??

see if this Wilcox article helps, is your 82 sending unit new or used?

Thanks, it appears that i have no ohms resistance at the tank, with no ohm resitance coming from the tank the default position is for the gauge to go to three o'clock, looks like i will need to pull the sending unit

I have seen the float assemblies on these new sending units fall off and lay inside the tank.
Obviously I would use jumper wires to get it to work before I go back in with it.

I just replaced the 82 sender i had in my 79, i noticed when i took the old one out it knocked the plug loose from the inside. (dont buy ebay specials) Possible test is does the fuel pump run?

If the gauge is reading just a tad past the 3 oclock rivet, you don't have any ohms input.

I had the same 3 oclock issue in my 75. I was advised to check and clean the ground wire between the tank and frame. Your sending unit is grounded to the tank and the tank and gauge are grounded to the frame. If all grounds are not clean and secure the gauge will point to the extreme right. By the way, I got this info from an old thread on this forum. My 75 is now working properly after some judicious cleaning.
