Default Fuel Injection Install - ECM Location

Guys - I'm starting a TBI install on my 78. I'll be using a 16197427 computer that I've tested and has good functionality. I am thinking of mounting the computer in the jack storage compartment and routing the wires thru the center console.

Earlier today I checked behind the glovebox, no space there unless I omit the liner. Don't want to do that if another opportunity exists.

Anyone have details and/or pictures?

And a followup question, where did others route wires thru the firewall?

The previous owner installed mine behind the passenger map pocket up high above the air plenums. Unfortunately, he ran the wires through the firewall up into the wiper bay and then from the wiper bay into the engine compartment ... don't do that unless you like leaks.

This is the reason why I am going with an integral ECM on my rebuild.

I mounted the ECU behind the passenger side dash. Wires go under the wiper tray so no leaks. Power leads go under the center console directly to battery.

Unless you bought an aftermarket harness you probably will need to extend the stock harness to reach the storage. What I did was install mine under the radio as I planned to go to a new radio anyway.

Under the radio was another spot if was thinking, but wonder d about getting access on and off during the tuning phase. Probably not a big deal once the setup is dialed in, just didn't want to pull off the console side cover each time I needed to acces PCM.

Did you route wires thru an existing hole there? I have plenty of harness material and planning to build mine from OEM components. I have a complete harness I used for a brief Megasquirt install on another vehicle, but think I'll start this one from scratch.

Any other install insights?

This is exactly where mine was.

I'll need to pull the liner and see if there is enough room on top for an OEM-sized computer box.

This is where I also mounted the ECU and routed the cables.

I also fitted a comms connector that sits just behind the lower part of the right dash pad. I plug my laptop into this for tuning.

Based off avatar pics, those with mounts behind glovebox (zwede, wabco40) have the map pocket style dash? Has anyone with the 78+ with a glovebox used that location?

Thanks for the input so far guys!

in '95 when I bought my '72, the wires for the L98 injection were run through the firewall, down in a crotch of the air ducts, below the wipers, and comes out just below and to the right of the HEI...so no good reason the wires could not neatly be run under the console and into the storage bins....my computer is of course behind the map pocket, you MAY try reduce the depth of the glove box liner....dunno if it worth the bother....

they may have changed the ducts around and so that firewall location may not work for you....

I'll be checking that area closely. I remember from my overdrive swap therat there wasn't an excessive amount of space thru the trans tunnel until the firewall.

I bought an issue of the February 2006 Corvette Fever magazine where they did a similar TBI install on a 77. The picture showing there routing thru the firewall isn't very good (extreme closeup), looks like they might have gone thru next to the accelerator pivot point. Going to get under the car soon and check it out.
