Are all A-6's the same? I need a replacement, dont want a rebuilt one, and can not afford a new one yet.
The local salvage yard has a few but mine is missing, and can not "match" it up.
Were the dimensions the same? I know about the diff. pulley size but wasn't too sure about the rest.
I figure for $25, I can give a used one a try.
Volvo even used them on 264's. I worked at a dealer. We offered the customer the choice of the OEM from Volvo for like $700 (sometimes older ones needed an updated pulley and clutch) or an AD/Delco one from a local supplier for like $100. When we called for one, we only asked for an "A-6". I think other than varying pulleys, there's only one type. :conehead

In addition to pulley's there are at least two A6 types ... those with superheat switch and those without. Why fool with a $25 junkyard piece that'll need to be rebuilt ... especially if you change to R134 gas ... when you can get a rebuilt one, with clutch, that's R134-ready ... for less than $70 ... no core? $67 outright ... all day long at carolinas auto supply in Charlotte NC see http://www.autosupplyhouse.com
The compressor is only a small part of the cost. If you install a used one that does not work, you may have lost your charge. If that is R12 you just lost $100 or more. Just go to the parts store and get a remanfactured one.
Rebuilt compressors are know to be junk.. A used one is a better choice. If you have a Delco distributor nearby you can get a dicount over the dealer price on a new one. They are made by Harrison.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I was thinking along the lines of Silvervetteman. EVERY rebuily I've bought- for a 75 Buick, 77 Pontiac, and a 74 Vette lasted maybe 6 months.
An old timer in the A/C business told me that the A6 has been around sooooooo long, and is so popular that some might have been rebuilt already 3 or more times and the are now just junk.
I am going to R134, so the gas is cheap enough.
I'll give it some more thought.
